The number most stores get wrong

Margins are usually built on the supplier invoice alone. By the time freight, duty, defects, packaging, outbound shipping and payment fees are counted, the real cost is often 50–90% higher than the line on the invoice.

That gap is where a store that looks profitable in Shopify's reports quietly is not.

How the defect rate works

If 2% of a shipment is unsellable, you still paid for it. The cost of those units spreads across the ones you can sell, so a 2% defect rate raises the effective landed cost by about 2%.

Watch the fixed fee

The flat 30c per transaction barely registers on a $200 order and is brutal on a $8 one. If you sell low-ticket items, bundling to lift AOV is often worth more than any discount you could run.
